An Outcome-Based Innovation Framework

Asking About Origins

Investigating Origins

Asking where the idea for work originated is a healthy way to dig into why the idea exists. There are many ways the idea can emerge; for example, sometimes it’s from an observation, sometimes it comes from a feeling, and sometimes an idea emerges because of a reaction to a specific piece of data. Asking where an idea began can help a team understand the importance, urgency, history, or context of a problem, and that can help drive the direction of research.

Why Start with Outcomes?

About Outcomes

Starting with an outcome in mind before working on a problem encourages teams to consider how their success will be measured. The way success is measured can change depending on the opportunity, but it should be defined by the benefit to the human(s) at the center of the work.

What is an Entity?

Human-Centered

In the ROAMER Model, humans are those who will benefit from building or improving a solution. The origin usually relates to the human affected – this commonly happens as a result of an observation. Examples of humans to focus on are a persona, a market segment, a team, or a business. The ROAMER Model puts the human at the center to ensure they are clearly and intentionally identified and understood.

Explore the Model

Activities in the ROAMER Model are presented in order as an acronym to make it easy to remember. However, the model encourages the access of any activity during the process of working through a problem – this is known as “roaming.” The individual activities in the ROAMER Model are: Retrieve, Observe, Analyze, Make, Evaluate, and Review.
